As per reports, the animal was hit by a car on a highway. The dramatic incident took place on September 8, 2026. The entire incident was captured on video and shared on social media. It has gone viral now. While the incident has drawn attention because of the sudden attack, it also highlights a less-discussed aspect of road travel in wildlife-rich parts of Karnataka. The incident videoAs per reports, the leopard was found injured on the highway after the collision. Forest personnel reached the location to rescue the animal. They also arranged for the medical treatment. A tranquilliser was administered, but the drug had apparently not taken full effect. Because the wild cat was still conscious, it suddenly lunged at one of the officials. The official was knocked down and other members of the team intervened. They all used a stick to distract the animal so that the colleague could move away. The leopard moved towards a grassy area beside the highway. The rescue team eventually succeeded in securing the animal and transporting it to a medical facility. The reports identify the location around Anagodu/Kokkanur along National Highway 48. It is an important corridor through Karnataka and connects several major destinations. The route is frequently used by people travelling by car between Bengaluru and northern or central parts of the state. It is not necessary for a wildlife encounter to happen inside a national park or a designated safari zone. Animals can appear on highways, village roads and stretches bordering agricultural land or forested areas. Why can an injured leopard be dangerousThe viral footage may look surprising because the leopard had already been tranquillised. However, tranquillisation does not necessarily mean an animal becomes instantly unconscious immediately. An injured wild animal can be scared, disoriented and defensive. In this case, the leopard had already suffered trauma after being hit by a vehicle. When people approached it, its instinctive response could still be to defend itself.Karnataka’s forest administration maintains dedicated mechanisms for responding to wildlife emergencies, while official forest services in the state also provide a 24-hour forest emergency helpline, 1926, for reporting wildlife and other forest-related emergencies. What should travellers do if they spot an injured wild animal?

Attack (snapshot)

As a traveller, if you spot a leopard, elephant, bear or any wild animal near a road:

Slow down

Maintain a safe distance.

Do not stop very close to the animal.

Don’t attempt to touch or feed the injured wild animal.

Call wildlife emergency/inform local authorities

Do not honk repeatedly

The Davanagere leopard incident is more than a viral rescue video.
